A boat can often be seen at a berth along the RongjiangRiver, in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The boat, which belongs to the Laobao Township Hospital of Sanjiang Dong Autonomous County, functions as an ambulance that transports pregnant and lying-in women to or from the hospital. As a result, many people have dubbed it the "mothers' boat."
LaobaoTownshipHospital is located on the eastern bank of the RongjiangRiver, but it provides services to many villages on the western bank. Some of the villages are situated in remote, thickly forested mountain areas. For that reason, the government allocated money, in June 2005, so the hospital could operate the boat."
Thanks to the boat, quite a few pregnant and lying-in women in danger have been pulled through," said Liang Qihai, the hospital's head. "The lives of more than 20 women have been saved by the boat, just counting my handling cases."
From April 21 to 28, 2006, an international meeting on mother and child care was held in Beijing. The "mothers' boat" caught the attention of experts from around the world.
